Lodi: Asian Water Buffalo

Ithaca Water Buffalo produces yogurt at their creamery in Interlaken between the two largest Finger Lakes, Cayuga and Seneca.

The herd of 100 water buffalo lives on a farm in Lodi, also between the two lakes.

A milking herd is unique in New York and rare in North America.

The milk is vat-pasteurized, slowly heated to a lower temperature than factory produced milk, and it is not homogenized. The yogurt and a blend of Jersey and water buffalo milk are available on Saturdays at the Regional Market on the north side.

From the Regional Market, Ready to Freeze

Oh, the fragrance in the car on the ride home...basil, strawberries and coffee!
Imagine the taste of Wake Robin's delicious cheeses!
Good day at the market,
(We didn't freeze all the strawberries.)

Gepetto's Wood Shoppe at the Regional Market

Mr. Geppetto will custom make any whirligig you can imagine. Just bring him your idea.

They sell standards, too, like this milkman and cow and a log cutter.

Imagine this rather odd Snow White repeatedly giving one of the Dwarfs a kiss on his forehead,

Heidelberg Bakery at the Regional Market

Saturday mornings at the Regional Market are always an adventure.

Today we found our favorite coffee, Forty Weight, and a new booth for us, Geppetto's Wood Shoppe from West Monroe with original whirligigs for gardens or yards. [There will be snaps of their wares tomorrow.]

Then we discovered that Heidelberg is at the market. Home is Herkimer for this excellent, non-industrial bakery. We love the Sourdough and the French Peasant. Cheers!

Leonard's Maple Syrup at the Regional Market

The Leonards drive up every Saturday from south of Cortland, where they and their children and grandchildren farm, until they sell out of maple syrup for the year.

Maple Syrup

One of my favorite signs of spring in the Northeast.  Mr. Leonard at 85 makes maple syrup every year. I have been buying from him for years.
Of course I didn't see him last year because we were in St. Louis, but I thought about him.
I found him at the Regional Market today selling the first syrup of this season.
When I told that we lived the past year in St. Louis, he told me that he has moved about 20 feet in his whole life.
Also, when he turned over the farm to his son, he and his wife visited all 50 states and he still feels there is no place like home, which is in the hilly country south of Cortland.
Mr. Leonard and I, if we are related, have to go back a long way.  We have discussed this and only know for sure that our relatives crossed the north Atlantic at least a couple of hundred years ago.

I bought a gallon. My downfall.
