I've seen pika out west, and the same with elk. You've captured them well.
John Colter might have been the first white man to see the Yellowstone area. His descriptions of the place weren't believed until photography came along.
I certainly agree and admire Colter. His story is amazing: that he went back alone immediately at the close of the Lewis and Clark tour, what he saw, how he survived. There are many places in the park and beyond named after him.
