Wake Robin Farm

Meet Meg Schader who, along with her husband Bruce and son Hugh, are developing Wake Robin Farm, first a thriving vegetable farm with a CSA...Community Supported Agriculture...group of one hundred devoted subscribers including us, now a thriving dairy farm where they make their own yogurt and cheese, and bottle their own milk with the cream on top!

We feel proud to know them when we see their products where we shop at Syracuse Real Food Coop and Green Hills Market as well as many other local and regional stores. This is Meg at last  Saturday's Syracuse Regional Market.

Burrowing Crows

I think the crow is my favorite bird. It is smart, works within community, talks in interesting ways, is curious, has a sense of humor, is crafty, keeps tabs on the family, cleans up the roads. So far I have not found out how to convince even a single crow that I meant it no harm.

These crows come regularly, about 20 of them in all, because I started putting corn on the ground. Lately the corn has been covered by two snowfalls, so the crows here are hard at work recovering it from up to 8 inches of new wet snow.

They pick up and fly at any motion or sound they detect from inside the house.

A red tail hawk hangs around the neighborhood, happy that we are drawing in smaller birds. One time, as it sat high in the black walnut, six or seven crows came up one at a time and silently gathered, unperturbed, sitting near and all around the red tail, just putting it on notice. Finally the red tail flew off.

Glassmakers have learned to move continuously. If they stop, with molten glass taking shape at the end of a rod, the glass will obey gravity. Twirling the piece is the first essential, and how it takes shape depends on many factors... keeping correct heat, blowing, adding additional molten glass, shaping with a variety of tools, and always the twirling. Concentration and coordination! This demonstration occurs many times every day at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning NY.
Ed works in Corning several days a month, and I get to explore, learn and photograph.

Winona State Forest in Mannsville, north of Syracuse, has miles and miles of dog, ski and snow machine trails.
The event is a non-sanctioned weekend of practice and informal competition. To me it seemed like a lot of fun, and extraordinarily complicated to get all the stuff, dogs and people there and ready to go, and to coordinate several timed races each day.
This team is just starting out on a 10 mile run. They've been psyched for hours. This is what they live for and love!

Taken at the point where Onondaga Creek comes into Onondaga Lake, locals will recognize the wonderful smoke stack of the old Will and Baumer candle company nearby.

We are reminded by our 2010 Missouri Botanical Garden Calendar that the Orchid Show is on about now. What a joy that was to see last year when we lived in St. Louis. If you are out that way, do not miss it! 

Tribute to Bob Crowe

Bob keeps the light shining and the camera focused on St. Louis, our old (temporary) hometown. We miss you! And we miss St. Louis!

Shako:wi Cultural Center

Shako:wi Cultural Center: this magnificent log structure houses history, culture and artifacts of the Oneida Indians and is located 25 miles east of Syracuse.


The Oneidas were and are the eastern neighbors of the Onondagas, upon whose homelands Syracuse is built.


The log structure is a beautiful work of craft and art that took two years to build with logs cut in the old growth forest of the Adirondacks by special permission.

Theme Day: Wood

Never harvested when this tract at Clark Reservation was cut, then a habitat tree for generations of forest dwellers, now this old tree is gradually giving up to gravity.
