This is the end of ice on Onondaga Lake for the year...fragments pushed into a bay on the east side of the lake. Earlier in the week it persisted; see a photo posted here on April 2. Yesterday there was still a large semi-transparent sheet covering the northern third of the lake. Above freezing temps, a great thundering rainstorm last night, and huge winds from the west have demolished what remained by this morning. It sounded like breaking glass.
Winds can definitely have that effect on ice. While the larger part of the lake here is closed, the canal it's attached to is opening up because of weather in the last couple of days near my place.
