Many years after the last fire watcher retired, followed by the gradual deterioration of the tower and the view, a dedicated group of local people and others who love the area and the mountain are restoring the Stillwater fire tower.
On the first official day of restoration last weekend, volunteers accomplished twice the work predicted including installing two new flights of stairs and the landing between them, improving the cement foundations, wire brushing the fencing, painting the frame and cab, and brushing the lower half of the old trail.
What a day: perfect weather, temperature, breezes, views, and the pleasure of shared work for the enjoyment of many visitors in the coming years.
Now to recover the view!
Very good of them to do!
