Loon at Stillwater

We've observed that there are no loon chicks this year on Stillwater.

The water level was unseasonably low during nest building and egg laying in early June and then it rained long and hard, bringing the level far above usual, destroying nests and their eggs, we think.

By then it was too late to start again.

As is is, in a normal season it takes all summer and well into the fall for new loons to develop strength and ability enough to fly out to the sea, and they are the last to leave, weeks after their parents.

  1. Great patterns on this one. That would no doubt do it for the year.
