We live a mile from Rosamond Gifford Zoo. It's easy to go any day, even if only for an hour. Ours is a winter zoo. Many of the animals are northern, active when it is cold here in upstate NY. Many of the people around here are not active during the winter, so we often have the place to ourselves.
Beloved or not, zoos have become an important link in species survival. This is a snow leopard.

I am always in two minds about animals in a zoo, but that said perhaps in the not too distant future they will be the only places some of these beautiful animals survive.
